Contraceptive Injection (Depo-Provera)

An injection for women that lasts 12 weeks (Depo-Provera) and releases the hormone progestogen very slowly into the body. This stops ovulation (the release of eggs).

Pros:

  • You don’t have to think about contraception as long as the injection works.

Cons:

  • Regular periods and fertility may take a while to return after stopping the injections.
  • Does not protect against STIs.
  • Periods often become irregular or stop.
