How is it passed on?

Unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex and through skin contact.

Symptoms

A painless ulcer around the penis or vagina, followed by a body rash, however like many STIs Syphilis can show no symptoms so it’s always best to have a full sexual health screen at your local GUM clinic.

What are the long term effects?

If untreated syphilis can cause damage to the nervous system, blindness, confusion and eventually death.

Can you get rid of it?

Yes a simple course of antibiotic injections is usually used to treat syphilis.
